Most Anticipated Movies of 2022

10. The Batman
Director: Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn/War of the Planet of the Apes)
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeremy Irons, Jeffery Wright, Andy Serkis, Zoe Kravitz, John Turturro

Although we've been over-saturated with superhero movies and shows for the past 10+ years, I am still excited to see Robert Pattinson take on the Dark Knight. He more than proved himself with his manic performance in the Safdie Brothers' Good Time, and Ari Aster's twisted The Lighthouse, so I trust he'll deliver. I worry it might be too overstuffed with villains, but since Batman is my favorite superhero, I can't help but geek out at the prospect of Paul Dano as The Riddler, or Colin Farrell pulling off The Penguin. Plus, Matt Reeves has done a fantastic job bringing a unique vision to effects-heavy action films lately, so I'm hoping for the best!

Release Date: March 4, 2022

9. Infinity Pool
Director: Brandon Cronenberg (Possessor, Antiviral)
Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Thomas Kretschmann, Amanda Brugel

Son of famed Canadian body horror auteur David Cronenberg, Brandon Cronenberg's sophomore film Possessor felt like he officially took the reigns of his father (sort of like how Joe Hill has become his own success in the genre despite the shadow of his father, Stephen King). I have no idea what Infinity Pool will be about, but I'm looking forward to his follow-up film, regardless!

Release Date: TBA

8. The Munsters
Director: Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects, Halloween)
Starring: Sherri Moon Zombie, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Dan Roebuck, Richard Brake

Hard rocker and master of horror Rob Zombie may not seem like the first choice for a family-friendly sitcom adaptation, but as one of the biggest Munsters fans on the planet - so much so his #1 hit "Dragula" was about the monster family's car - I have faith that he will lovingly bring these characters back to life... or rather, back to the undead.

Release Date: TBA

7. Babylon
Director: Damien Chazelle (La La LandWhiplash)
Starring: Brad Pitt, Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart, Samara Weaving, Katherine Waterston, Eric Roberts, Max Minghella

Damien Chazelle is one of my favorite directors right now, with La La Land and Whiplash being modern classics as far as I'm concerned, and First Man being a totally underrated biopic. Described as "The Great Gatsby on steroids," Babylon very much seems like something in his wheelhouse (a 1920s-set Hollywood period piece), and I have no doubt it will be an Oscar-hopeful next season.

Release Date: TBA

6. Killers of the Flower Moon
Director: Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street)
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, Robert DeNiro, John Lithgow, Lily Gladstone, Pat Healy

Any self-respecting cinema fan should always include the latest Scorsese movie on a "Most Anticipated" list. But this one I'm especially curious about since I actually read the true crime book it's based off of, which I rated 5 stars on GoodReads. It's a fascinating story about Native Americans being murdered and a conspiracy to get at the oil their reservation was on. I have full faith Scorsese will make a great film adaptation here!

Release Date: TBA

5. The Northman
Director: Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse, The Witch)
Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Bjork

Robert Eggers has such a unique, distinct style unlike anyone else making movies. A former linguistics major, his films tend to feature old time-y language that takes some adjusting to at first, but provides actors so much interesting material to work with. The Northman is likely to continue this tradition, and seriously... just look at that cast!

Release Date: April 8, 2022

4. Avatar 2
Director: James Cameron (Terminator 2, Aliens)
Starring: Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Yeoh, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Jermaine Clement, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Edie Falco

It still doesn't seem possible. It will have been 13 years since the first Avatar was released in theaters when this sequel finally comes out, which is insane! James Cameron, however, has made two of the greatest sequels of all time with Terminator 2 and Aliens, so I'm hoping beyond hope that he is able to pull off something special. His obsession with the oceans and sea life is sure to make for some cinematic eye candy, at the very least.

Release Date: December 16, 2022

3. Disappointment Boulevard
Director: Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar)
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Parker Posey, Amy Ryan, Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone

Ari Aster has yet to make a film that is not incredibly messed up, so him joining with Joaquin Phoenix seems like a match made in heaven. This is supposedly a comedy, but I'll believe it when I see it - I fully expect this to be dark!

Release Date: TBA

2. Nope
Director: Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us)
Starring: Steven Yeun, Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya

Jordan Peele's pivot from comedy to horror has been astounding. Get Out is a modern classic, and Us proved it wasn't a fluke - Peele is just as genius at making jokes as scares! So I'll be excited for any project he's in, but when Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun are starring - two of the best actors working right now - it's sure to be great!

Release Date: July 22, 2022

1. The Whale
Director: Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan)
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Samantha Morton, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau

Darren Aronofsky is among my favorite filmmakers, and I'd say he's particularly adept at getting unexpectedly amazing performances out of "forgotten" actors, whether it's Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler or Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream. I have a feeling The Whale might mark Brendan Fraser's official "comeback" in a huge way.

Release Date: TBA
