10 Biggest Oscar Snubs of 2020

It happens every year... there's only so many nominee slots to fill. Certain filmmakers and cast members are bound to be left disappointed. But this year felt particularly snubby. Here are what I consider the most surprising Oscar snubs of 2020!

10. Dolemite is My Name for Best Actor and Best Costume

Eddie Murphy made a wonderful comeback with Dolemite is My Name, about the blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore. His performance as the eccentric comedian-turned-cult figure brought him some awards buzz, but unfortunately wasn't enough to land on the nominee list. Same goes for costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who won the category last year for Black Panther.

9. One Child Nation for Best Documentary

Granted, I have only seen one of the nominated documentaries at this point - but One Child Nation, about China's notorious one-child household policy, is much more engrossing than American Factory. It's interesting that the similarly-themed animated short film Sisters was nominated though, adding to the sting of this snub!

8. Jamie Foxx for Supporting Actor in Just Mercy

Jamie Foxx delivers among the best performances of his career, but did the Academy care? Apparently not! They were too transfixed by Brad Pitt's glistening shirtlessness in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to see this sobering drama about an innocent man on death row. It's a shame!

7. Jennifer Lopez for Hustlers

Granted, as of right now I have not seen Hustlers, but a lot of predictor websites were banking on J Lo to nab this nomination for her role in the Scorsese-inspired "stripper thriller." Maybe some other year she'll be able to redeem her Razzie win for Gigli with an Oscar statue!

6. Beyonce's Lion King song

I'm glad this wasn't nominated to be honest, but how dare those voters deny the Queen Bee her righteous prize?? Who cares if this song was an unnecessary, unmemorable addition to a soundtrack that was fine as it was? IT'S BEY. DO NOT DENY HER.

5. Frozen II for Animated Feature

Another movie I'm glad wasn't nominated as it made room for smaller, stunning animated films like Klaus and I Lost My Body. But this comes as a bit of a shocker nonetheless. This snub seems like a giant middle finger to Disney in the wake of this breaking records at the box office.

4. Couple's Therapy Needed?: Greta Gerwig and husband Noah Bambach, Best Director snubs for Little Women and Marriage Story

Even though there were other Best Director-worthy women, such as Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and Alma Har'el (Honey Boy), Gerwig and her followers seem to take it as a personal affront to all women when she doesn't make the cut. But at least she doesn't have to sulk in jealousy at home as her husband, director of the much-nominated Marriage Story, also missed the top five. You can't win them all!

3. Adam Sandler for Best Actor in Uncut Gems

This snub hurts especially hard since Adam Sandler promised to make a movie "so bad on purpose" if he wasn't nominated! I guess we now have to collectively brace ourselves for Jack and Jill 2...

2. Rocketman for Best Costume

I don't understand AT ALL how a movie like The Irishman is nominated in this category over Rocketman. It literally makes no sense and if I start to think about it too much I'll probably burst a vessel somewhere.

1. The Farewell SHUT OUT

No Best Original Screenplay. No nom for Awkwafina, who won the Golden Globe. No nom for Supporting Actress for Zhao Shuzen, the best movie grandma ever! No nom for Lulu Wang, despite this being a personal multicultural passion project and a great candidate for a female director to be nominated. And of course it didn't land Best Picture either. It's just not A24's year!

OTHER SAD SNUBS 😢:
- Downton Abbey for Best Costume
Honey Boy for Best Actor (Noah Jupe) and Supporting Actor (Shia Labeouf)
- The Lighthouse for Best Supporting Actor (Willem Dafoe)
Richard Jewell for Best Actor (Paul Walter Hauser) and Best Picture
- Rocketman for Best Actor (Taron Egerton), Best Cinematography, Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing
- Us for Best Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Music Score
Waves for Best Actor (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Best Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown)
- Wild Rose for Best Song ("Glasgow - No Place Like Home")
